Standing from behind the counter where she’d ducked down, Becca stared at the man who stepped into the cabin’s doorway with a duffel bag gripped in his hand. Dad?

There was no denying that it was Jack’s father. It was like looking thirty years in the future to see what Jack would look like. He had the same dark brown hair, the same build, although slightly thinner, and with a few more lines around his eyes.

Stepping in, Jack’s dad headed toward the kitchen, flicking a glance back at his son. “I thought I’d check in and bring some supplies.”

Following him in, Jack’s tone was full of incredulity, even as he placed the grocery bags on the kitchen island. “Check in? It’s a three-hour car ride.”

Shrugging, Jack’s dad pushed the grocery bags aside. “I’m retired. I’ve got the time.” He placed the duffel on the table with a thunk.

Frowning, Jack walked forward and unzipped the bag. From Becca’s vantage point, she could see more than half a dozen weapons.

Jack’s dad nodded toward it. “I thought you could use some backup.”

With a smile, his dad’s gaze fell on Becca. Extending his hand, he walked toward her. “Hi there. I’m John Callaghan.”

Taking the outstretched hand, she couldn’t help but notice the twinkle in the older man’s eyes. It was impossible to keep the smile from her own face. “Hi. I’m Becca. Becca Faulkner.”

“Nice to meet you, Becca. Sorry it’s under these circumstances.”

“Yeah, me too.”

“Okay, Dad, thanks for the food and weapons, but you need to get going.”

Turning, John raised his eyebrows. “I’m not going anywhere. Your situation seems to have gotten a little more difficult, and I’m going to hang around in case you need some help.”

Jack was already shaking his head before his dad had finished speaking. “Absolutely not. There is no way you’re getting in the middle of this. Dad, you know you’re . . .” Jack just waved toward his father in a general way.

His father rolled his eyes. “I know I’m sick. But I’m not dead yet. So if someone’s coming after my boy, I’m going to be standing in front of him to make sure that they have to go through me to get to him. Now, why don’t we make some dinner, and then you guys can tell me what’s going on?”

Looking between the two of them, Becca wasn’t sure what to say. This obviously was not her decision to make.

“Fine, dinner,” Jack growled. “We’ll tell you what’s going on, but then you need to head out.”

“We’ll see. I brought some steaks. What do you two say?” His dad rubbed his hands together. “How do you like your steak, Becca?”

“Uh, medium rare.”

“A girl after my own heart.” He frowned over at Jack. “Well, come on, let’s get started.”

With a sigh, Jack grabbed one of the bags and headed over to the counter. John caught Becca’s gaze and gave her a wink.

Becca grinned back in response. John was a charmer, all right. And she felt a little better knowing Jack had someone else helping him out.
