Standing from behind the counter where sheâd ducked down, Becca stared at the man who stepped into the cabinâs doorway with a duffel bag gripped in his hand. Dad?
There was no denying that it was Jackâs father. It was like looking thirty years in the future to see what Jack would look like. He had the same dark brown hair, the same build, although slightly thinner, and with a few more lines around his eyes.
Stepping in, Jackâs dad headed toward the kitchen, flicking a glance back at his son. âI thought Iâd check in and bring some supplies.â
Following him in, Jackâs tone was full of incredulity, even as he placed the grocery bags on the kitchen island. âCheck in? Itâs a three-hour car ride.â
Shrugging, Jackâs dad pushed the grocery bags aside. âIâm retired. Iâve got the time.â He placed the duffel on the table with a thunk.
Frowning, Jack walked forward and unzipped the bag. From Beccaâs vantage point, she could see more than half a dozen weapons.
Jackâs dad nodded toward it. âI thought you could use some backup.â
With a smile, his dadâs gaze fell on Becca. Extending his hand, he walked toward her. âHi there. Iâm John Callaghan.â
Taking the outstretched hand, she couldnât help but notice the twinkle in the older manâs eyes. It was impossible to keep the smile from her own face. âHi. Iâm Becca. Becca Faulkner.â
âNice to meet you, Becca. Sorry itâs under these circumstances.â
âYeah, me too.â
âOkay, Dad, thanks for the food and weapons, but you need to get going.â
Turning, John raised his eyebrows. âIâm not going anywhere. Your situation seems to have gotten a little more difficult, and Iâm going to hang around in case you need some help.â
Jack was already shaking his head before his dad had finished speaking. âAbsolutely not. There is no way youâre getting in the middle of this. Dad, you know youâre . . .â Jack just waved toward his father in a general way.
His father rolled his eyes. âI know Iâm sick. But Iâm not dead yet. So if someoneâs coming after my boy, Iâm going to be standing in front of him to make sure that they have to go through me to get to him. Now, why donât we make some dinner, and then you guys can tell me whatâs going on?â
Looking between the two of them, Becca wasnât sure what to say. This obviously was not her decision to make.
âFine, dinner,â Jack growled. âWeâll tell you whatâs going on, but then you need to head out.â
âWeâll see. I brought some steaks. What do you two say?â His dad rubbed his hands together. âHow do you like your steak, Becca?â
âUh, medium rare.â
âA girl after my own heart.â He frowned over at Jack. âWell, come on, letâs get started.â
With a sigh, Jack grabbed one of the bags and headed over to the counter. John caught Beccaâs gaze and gave her a wink.
Becca grinned back in response. John was a charmer, all right. And she felt a little better knowing Jack had someone else helping him out.
